Dining Bench and Armchair Set, Kozma Lajos Vienna–Budapest Modernism, c. 1930 – Documented

This elegant dining bench and armchair set originates from the refined Vienna–Budapest modern design culture of the interwar period and is attributed to Kozma Lajos. Crafted from solid American black walnut, the ensemble features well-balanced proportions, gently curved armrests, subtly splayed legs and vertically segmented, softly rounded backrests, reflecting a clear interior-architectural approach.

A key and rare feature is the exceptional survival of the ORIGINAL upholstery and ORIGINAL seat cushions. The seating surfaces are supported by original Viennese cane work (Wiener Geflecht). The bench retains its cane seat fully original, while the armchair underwent careful, period-correct restoration due to earlier damage. The seat cushions remain original, with African fibre stuffing and spring support, and the fixed backrest upholstery is entirely original, showing only light, authentic wear.

Both pieces are fully upholstered on the reverse, allowing free placement within a dining or salon interior. Conceived as a unified dining ensemble, this set was made for a representative interior rather than mass production, making it a rare and highly collectible example of Central European modern dining furniture.

Kozma Lajos (1884–1948) was a Hungarian architect, graphic designer, interior and furniture designer, and a key figure of Central European modernism. In 1913 he became a professor at the School of Industrial Arts and founded the Budapest Workshop (Budapesti Műhely) with the aim of reforming domestic interior design. His furniture of the 1920s became known as “Kozma Baroque”. In 1925 he received the Grand Gold Medal of Applied Arts, while his work was already moving decisively toward Art Deco and modernism.
