Ferenc Fürst, Art deco Solid walnut Armchair, Hungary 1938
Ferenc Fürst Armchair, 1938 – Original Signed Design
An exceptionally rare lounge armchair designed in 1938, accompanied by the original hand-signed drawing by Ferenc Fürst. The executed piece faithfully follows every essential structural and stylistic detail of the original design, making it not only an authentic period object but also a thoroughly documented collector’s piece of museum significance. Crafted from solid black walnut, the armchair features an elegant bentwood frame that embodies the refined aesthetics of Hungarian Art Deco. It retains its original coil-sprung seat and backrest construction, providing outstanding comfort, as well as its exceptionally well-preserved original upholstery—an extremely rare survival after nearly ninety years. The frame is structurally sound and displays a beautiful natural patina.
Ferenc Fürst was a Gold-Wreathed Master Cabinetmaker, whose workshop ranked among the finest furniture makers in Hungary during the interwar period. He executed furniture for some of the country’s most distinguished designers, including Lajos Kozma, Gyula Kaesz, and József Peresztegi. His name appears repeatedly in the archives of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest as the cabinetmaker responsible for the execution of documented furniture designs, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship and reputation of his workshop.
The survival of the original signed 1938 design drawing, together with the chair’s documented provenance, original upholstery, and preserved sprung construction, makes this armchair an outstanding example of Hungarian Art Deco furniture and a highly desirable piece for serious collectors and museum collections alike.
